Victorine Meurent is one of the most visible figures of modern art – Manet’s “Olympia” was one of the ten masterpieces for which she posed – and yet she remains practically unknown. Born in 1844, she was a painter, but her work has disappeared and all that remains of her correspondence is one letter. This investigation will begin in Paris where Victorine was born in 1844 and end in Colombes where she died in 1927. Along the way we will visit not only Montmartre and the bohemian crowd she hung out with for over 40 years, but also the States, the destination of a mysterious voyage which she undertook in the 1860’s. The investigation will lead us through Manet body of work to the raise of Impressionism. Has her work really completely disappeared ? The film holds a stunning revelation.
